Boston Harbor Islands 2016 Centennial Bioblitz
Grab your backpack and explore the wilds of the Boston Harbor Islands like never before during our National Parks Centennial Biobiltz and concurrent Festival on Saturday, September 24, 2016. Organized by the National Geographic Society and the National Park Service, this event is part of the larger National Parks BioBlitz, with more than one hundred national parks across the country celebrating biodiversity in parks to commemorate the National Park Service Centennial.
During BioBlitz, teams of scientists, students, teachers and YOU will join forces in a race to discover and document the flora and fauna of the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park. From nature walks lead by expert scientist and a chance to visit multiple islands to biodiversity games for the whole family, there will be something for everyone.
Part scientific endeavor, part festival, and part outdoor classroom, BioBlitz provides a unique opportunity to work alongside leading experts to discover, count and document the living creatures in the parks; to contribute to the park’s official species lists; to explore interconnectedness of plants, animals, the environment, culture and our daily lives; and to help protect the extraordinary biodiversity in our parks. With top scientists as their guides, participants will discover that our parks are more than tourist attractions and recreational spots, but also living laboratories rich in biodiversity.
Explorers of all ages are needed. All events are free and open to the public; however, advance online registration is required to secure a spot on a BioBlitz inventory team. Inventory teams are best suited for ages 8 and up. We will be updating and creating registration for the individual naturalist lead walks and inventory teams soon, so stay tuned!
Whether you have a couple of hours or a full day, there are activities to engage the whole family.
